Chapter Twenty-Nine

Sage

I felt interrogated enough. It was time to prod Mr. I’m-So-Cool into revealing something stupid about himself. What would his story be? Maybe something from a film set? Clark kept me in stitches last night, telling me tales about near-disasters when filming other movies.

“Your turn,” I said. “You promised you’d tell your story if I told mine.”

Ajax stared into the cup he was holding. “I hate sleeping alone. It freaks me out.”

That was it? I tilted my head and looked at him. His jaw was set, and his hands were so tight around the mug, it might shatter with any more force.

He wasn’t joking, so I tried to. “If that’s your best come-to-bed-with-me line, it needs work.”

He snapped his gaze up, to meet mine. It took a second before the usual Ajax was back. “Does that one not work for you, Sagey-Licious?”

I shook my head. “Nu huh. I prefer the subtle approach.”

He ran a hand across his jaw. The look he gave me was all devilment. “Noted.”

I took a sip of my tea. “Why does it freak you out?” I asked gently. “I told you my tale in all its embarrassing glory.”

“Yes, you did. And I owe you the same.” The teasing light was gone from his eyes. “I was seven or eight and staying with friends overnight—they were older kids that lived up the street. My parents had the chance to go out somewhere, tickets they won to a concert, and I wanted them to go, to have a rare night out. We didn’t have much money.

“I was a bit uncomfortable, because the other kids’ father got heavy handed when he’d been drinking, and my parents didn’t know that. Anyway, Darren and Alec, my supposed friends, snuck out after their parents were in bed, and they didn’t warn me. I woke up to find them missing, no note or anything, and I was too scared to go back to sleep, in case their father came in and found them gone.”

He blew out a noisy breath. “I sat up all night and waited for them. They came back at sunrise and said they crashed a party and thanks for keeping quiet.” His gaze searched my face. “Somehow, in the tangled ball of yarn inside my head, AKA my brain, this translated to my not feeling safe to sleep if I was alone.”

“Just like with me,” I said. “There’s no logical reason to be afraid of swimming in a pool, but I still am. I’m sorry that happened to you. You must have been scared. Did you stay friends with them?”

“God no. I met Archie the next day. He was the new kid and small for his age, and I saw Darren shove him face first onto the floor, while Alec kicked his backpack. I went over, and said something about Darren’s dad being a bully and handing down the recipe or some shit like that. Anyway, Darren tried to beat the crap out of me but was stopped by Ed and Grant, and after that, we hung out together.
